Giovanni Noto (b.1902 - d.1985) was a supreme world-famous master Italian carver who managed the renowned Giovanni Apa Studio in Italy as artistic director from 1947 until his death in 1985.
He was known as the "professor" and called "Michelangelo's Chisel" for his outstanding and notable art talent.
[Giovanni Apa Studio: In 1848, Giovanni Apa, who was a supreme Master Italian Goldsmith, founded his 'Giovanna Apa Studio' in Torre del Greco, Italy, a town on the Gulf of Naples at the foot of Mount Vesuvius. Ever since the time of the Bourbon Kingdom of Naples, this region has been known worldwide as a center of excellence in coral and jewelry works.]
Signed on the reverse back... "G. Noto"
*Many Cameos bearing his "G.Noto" signature were signed as such by his student artists in Torre del Greco upon his approval. He personally supervised these artworks and performed portions of the hand-carving on each piece for teaching purposes.
This Very Very Fine piece is extremely well-executed. The workmanship is far superior to that found typical of his students.
A cameo appraiser's opinion is that Giovanni Noto did indeed carve this exquisite cameo mostly in its entirety even if the signature was done by a student.
The traditional Cameo Shell of Italy is derived from the flame or bullmouth helmet cassis rufa, a marine mollusk found on the African coast and is commonly called the Carnelian Shell.
This Rare 'G. Noto' Cameo is fitted with a 14K pin stem and 14K roll-over clasp plus a movable hide-away 14K pendant bale.
G. Noto cameos are very hard to find on the market since most of them are in museums or the hand of collectors.
Also note the unusually large size of the piece which is typical for Noto Cameos (2.50" x 1 15/16") (18.58gm)
